Apprentice Roof Tiler On A Roll

14 April 2000

HARD work does have its rewards as one young Edgeworth apprentice is proving.

Shane Penman is a 16-year-old first year apprentice roof tiler, but his hard work isn't only limited to his job.

Shane was recently selected in the under-18 Australian roller hockey team to play in the Oceanic Cup, a best of five test series against New Zealand.

The former school athletics champion recently took up roller hockey and after only 12 months in the sport was selected to play for the Australian under-18 team.

Shane leaves for New Zealand today for two weeks to play in the cup, which is played in age divisions.

His employer, Newcastle MBA Training, gave $150 towards expenses as a reward for his steady work both in his job and sporting achievements.

Group training manager Len Blakeney said Shane was a great model to other young people who might not be suited to higher level schooling, but were able to make a significant contribution through their work ethic and attitude.
