Tiled His Way Into Race Wins

10 July 2000

When he was working as a roof tiler, Scott Pollard visited Canterbury with his family and immediately decided to scale heights of a different kind after falling in love with racing.

The radical career change paid off yesterday as the 27-year-old apprentice recorded his first metropolitan double at the very track that played an instrumental role in his life-changing move.

Pollard, indentured to respected horseman Kevin Robinson on the South Coast, notched his first city winner on Wednesday aboard the David Royle-trained Moruya River Lad.

``There were no special celebrations but I was smiling all the way home," said Pollard, who returned to the scene of his inaugural city triumph to collect two more wins yesterday.

Pollard won aboard The Vagrant (16/1) in the KJ Burton and Co Handicap (1550m) for Rosehill conditioner Bradley Puckeridge.

Pollard then gained a late ride replacing Melanie Mantkelow aboard topweight Storm Princess (9/2) for Gosford trainer Gerry Moon to win the Newtown Jets Handicap (1100m).
